Definition of Chemical Industry

This is the general name of the industry in which chemical changes are used in the main part of the manufacturing process, and other industrial sectors classify industries according to their products but the chemical industry includes classification by some products and is characterized by classification according to manufacturing methods. Therefore, if chemical reactions are used in production methods in the product sector traditionally, which was classified as a chemical industry, this is classified as a chemical industry.

The classification of the chemical industry is as follows.

Classification by starting material : Coal chemical industry, Electrochemical industry, Petrochemical industry, Natural gas chemical industry, Wood chemical industry etc.
Classification by intermediate product : Carbide industry, Ammonia synthetic industry, Soda industry, Sulfuric acid industry etc.
Classification by production technology : Catalytic chemical industry, High temperature chemical industry, High pressure chemical industry, Synthetic chemical industry, Radiation chemical industry, Photochemical industry, Expanadable chemical industry, High molecular chemical industry etc.
Classification by product : Fertilizer industry, Synthetic resin industry, Synthetic rubber industry, Synthetic detergent industry, Dye industry, Paint industry, Pharmaceutical industry, Pesticide industry, etc.

Scope of chemical industry

Based on the 「Standard industrial classification」 of the National Statistical Office, the official industrial classification standard of Korea, the scope of the broad chemical industry is as follows.

Industrial classification Industrial classification code
Pulp, paper, and paper products 17
Coke and petroleum refining 19
Manufacturing of chemical substances and chemicals products 20
Manufacturing of medical materials and medicines 21
Rubber and plastic products 22
Glass and nonmetallic mineral products 23

Development process

The founding of the Lucky Chemical Industry Company in 1947 is the beginning of the domestic chemical industry with a modern concept.

Through the introduction of technology from developed countries in the late 1960s, the petrochemical industry has begun to shape the industry and now has an ethylene production capacity of 5.75 million tons a year, ranking fifth in the world.

After laying the foundation for development through the introduction of technology from developed countries in the 1970s and the introduction of domestic material patents in 1987, the precision chemical industry began to develop the technical ingredients, intermediates product, and new materials of precision chemistry such as medicine and pesticides.

Direction of development

Balanced development between industries through the development of original and core technologies in the chemical industry

Strengthening global competitiveness by developing original technologies in the petrochemical sector and establishment of advanced industrial structure by replacing imports and converting exports of petrochemical products, which are raw materials, into domestic consumption by the development of core technologies in the precision chemical sector
Providing momentum for the growth of high-tech industries such as IT, BT, and IT, which are promising industries in the 21st century through the development and industrialization of the technical ingredients, intermediates product of the precision chemical sector

Environmentally friendly industrialization of the chemical industry
